Next meetup:

April 30 @ 1:30 Willistead Manor, 1899 Niagara Street.

Meet near the front entrance to the mansion prepared for outdoor shooting.

About the venue:
Willistead Manor is a historic mansion located in Walkerville. It was designed by Detroit architect Albert Kahn and built 1904-1906. There are 15-acres of park grounds and it is a very popular site for local wedding photography. There are plenty of opportunities for shots of stone, spring gardens, iron work, and probably people strolling through the park.

Making Movies with a digital camera

I never thought in a million years that I would be making movies someday. I was surprised this week when I did just that. For a class project, two friends and I used the movie feature on our digital cameras to record footage of professors and classmates. We used a Canon A75 and a Kodak Easyshare. My camera, the A75, would record 3 minutes at a time - the perfect length of an interview. We'd sent the questions on ahead of time so that people could prepare their responses.

We'd tried to find a digital video camera to borrow or rent but had no luck. We decided that whatever quality we got with our point-and-shoot cameras would have to do. It turns out that the small cameras were less intimidating to people. We were able to balance them on shelves or books, or just hold them waist high and talk to our subjects. It also made for easy entry into cramped offices.

Spring meetup coming soon!

Spring is almost here and it's time to get out and get clicking without freezing off your fingertips. Stay tuned for the next meetup, coming soon to a sunny day in your neighbourhood...

What to buy

Xmas is coming and friends keep asking me which digital camera they should get. With all the new babies arriving and missed photo opps everybody wants to join the digital bandwagon. There's no denying that digital photography has opened access to taking good photos to a lot of people who in the past had to settle for red-eye galore and fuzzy photos where have the people in them were blinking or drooling or looking the wrong way.

I keep steering people to the first digital I had - the Canon A75. Canon has been around a long time and they make a good product. This uses compact flash which is much cheaper than the memory stick Sony puts in their cameras. The A75 has a choice of shooting fully auto or prioritizing one setting or going fully manual. And unless you plan on making poster-sized prints of a small cropped area of an original the resolution is perfectly satisfactory - for the purposes of these people at least.

It's time!

The next event for the Windsor Photomeetup Group will take place December 27, 2005. Everyonewho got a new camera for Chrismukkah will have a chance to try it out!

Time and location to be announced - but post suggestions here. Consider that it will be ccccccccccold.

Check back in a few days....
